For us, excavation has always been about more than operating equipment. It’s about helping property owners turn difficult land into usable ground while completing the work correctly from the start. With over 10 years of industry experience, we’ve spent years working on excavation and dirt work projects ranging from residential site preparation to challenging mountain terrain throughout Colorado’s Western Slope.
Over time, we saw that many property owners struggled to find contractors who communicated clearly, showed up when promised, and were willing to take on difficult jobs. Remote locations, steep slopes, limited access, and demanding site conditions often caused other contractors to walk away from projects. We built Back Country Excavation around the idea that customers deserve straightforward communication, quality workmanship, and a contractor willing to tackle the work that needs to be done.
Today, we work with homeowners, landowners, and agriculture owners who need help preparing homesites, clearing land, installing driveways, excavating foundations, constructing ponds, trenching utilities, and building fences. Many of the properties we work on require careful planning because of terrain, drainage concerns, or access limitations. Those challenges are part of what we enjoy most about the work.
As a family-owned and operated business, we approach every project with the same level of care we would expect on our own property. We believe details matter, communication matters, and the quality of the finished work matters. Whether we’re preparing a site for a new home or improving access to rural acreage, our goal remains the same: provide workmanship people can trust and create results that stand up to everyday use.

The excavation work completed at the beginning of a project often affects everything that follows. That’s why we believe in slowing down when necessary, paying attention to details, and taking the time to understand site conditions before work begins. Proper grading, drainage considerations, excavation depth, access planning, and site preparation all contribute to the finished result.
Many problems that appear later can often be traced back to shortcuts taken early in the process. Our approach is built around avoiding those shortcuts whenever possible. We focus on workmanship that supports long-term use rather than simply completing the task as quickly as possible.
Whether we’re excavating a foundation, building a driveway, trenching utilities, or clearing land, we approach every project with the same mindset. The work should be completed correctly, and the customer should feel confident about the finished result.
Communicate Clearly Throughout the Process
Property owners should never have to wonder what is happening on their project. Clear communication helps set expectations, answer questions, and keep everyone working toward the same objective.
Before work begins, we discuss site conditions, project requirements, and potential considerations that may affect the work. During the project, we stay available to answer questions and provide updates when needed. We believe customers appreciate honesty and straightforward conversations, especially when making decisions about their property.
Many of our customers come to us because they want a contractor who is responsive and willing to explain the process. We take that responsibility seriously and work hard to maintain open communication from the first conversation through project completion.

Not every excavation company is interested in working on steep terrain, remote properties, or difficult access locations. Some of the most rewarding projects we’ve completed have involved conditions that required extra planning, problem-solving, and patience.
Colorado’s Western Slope includes a wide variety of terrain, and many properties present unique challenges that can’t be approached with a one-size-fits-all method. We enjoy evaluating those conditions, developing a practical plan, and finding a way to complete the work safely and efficiently.
